The historic Manhattan Beach Roundhouse sits at the foot of the Pier, and features an aquarium for kids which serves as Oceanographic Teaching Stations’ (a 501(c)3 non-profit) educational facility. Inside are both viewing and touch tanks each displaying a brilliant selection of marine fish and invertebrates! There’s also a kid’s area with books and puzzles.

Our friend Lynne Gross is a long-time volunteer for the Manhattan Beach Roundhouse who helped stage the recent benefit for the facility, and we were happy to help her out with photos of the event.
The “Sea Starry Night” benefit was all about honoring the new name — Roundhouse Aquarium Teaching Center, attracting about 250 folks, including four of the five Manhattan Beach City Council members, volleyball superstar Holly McPeak, TV producer J.D. Roth (“The Biggest Loser,”) and California state senator Ben Allen.
Other guests included: Andrea Boyer, Bill Bloomfield, Christine Cronin-Hurst, Cheryl Fire, Lysa Grigorian, Jeff and Yaira Gurman, Heather Interian, Michelle Kim, Loren Kosmont, Devon Langella, Jackie May, Steve and Houry Samuelian, Janet Soliman-Suard, Heidi Thompson, Elaine Trotter, Dickie VanBreene-Burton, Julie Watts, David White, and Annette Zuker.
Sponsors included the Bloomfield Family Foundation, Continental Development Corporation, Chevron, Dickie and Mark Burton, Portia and Andy Cohen, Farmers Insurance – the Carla Ramirez Agency of Manhattan Beach, Gurman Wealth Management Inc. Insurance Strategies, Kinecta Federal Credit Union, Diane and John Roberts, Steve and Houry Samuelian and the West Basin Municipal Water District.
The Aquarium, per Lynne, “is an iconic piece of Manhattan Beach’s local landscape and a vital link to marine education. It serves over 15,000 students a year and hosted approximately 300,000 visits in 2015. For many youth who walk through the Aquarium doors, a visit to the Roundhouse is their first exposure to oceanic and environmental sciences.”
